Its construction dates back to a Leonardo da Vinci’s ancient project that was commissioned by the Borgia family in order to make Cesenatico harbour a safer place against attacks. Cesenatico has always been a strategic harbour. The Floating Maritime Museum, situated in the oldest and innermost part of the Leonardo's canal, shows the particular role of the port of Cesenatico over the years. The Museum collects many restored sailing boats used for fishing and marine traffic in the Adriatic Sea during the last centuries.
So, the port is the symbol of Cesenatico and it has always been the heart of business and politics activities of the town.

The Port of Cesenatico
The port of Cesenatico is the heart of the town, and is still the area along which are being developed all Cesenatico core activities. In fact, along the port there are the most renowned restaurants, boats ready to go fishing, the most important museums and much more.
If you look for history and ancient atmospheres, we suggest you a route that starts from the harbour and arrive to Piazza Pisacane (Pisacane Square), where is located the famous monument to the national hero Giuseppe Garibaldi. From here, you can easily reach the old fish market, and immediately after the lovely Piazza delle Conserve (Conserve Square), which still keeps intact the stone warehouses that once kept food. Then, go towards the Piazzetta delle Erbe (Erbe Square) and the Piazza di Ciceruacchio (Ciceruacchio Square).
Close to the old lighthouse, there are the famous Leonardo da Vinci gates that still have the function of defending the town from sea storm.
Many festivals, events, local festivities are organized throughout the year and they involve citizens and tourists. Events take place all along the famous harbour. Some of these are really popular, such as the Annual Cuccagna (the Adriatic greasy pole) and the famous nativity scene arranged on some boats.

The Floating Maritime Museum

A holiday in Cesenatico gives to you the occasion of visiting the famous Floating Maritime Museum, situated in the oldest and innermost part of the Leonardo's canal. The Museum collects and represents ten typical Adriatic Sea sailing boats (restored and reactivated) with decorated sails. The boats were used for fishing and marine traffic and now are the symbol of how fishermen and people lived in the past. During Christmastime there is a traditional crib on the boats with artistic statues which tell us the Nativity story in marine style.

Marino Moretti’s house

The harbour of Cesenatico is also where Marino Moretti’s house is located. He was born there in 1885 and died there in 1979. His house still keeps its original furnishings and many valuable documents and books, a very important heritage for all fans of the poet.
For over fifteen years, Moretti’s house has been hosting a famous study centre on Italian literature of the twentieth century that annually organizes seminars and exhibitions of great importance, such as the Biennial Prize for philology.

The 'Conserve' Square

The 'Conserve' Square is close to Cesenatico port.
The 'Conserve' are ice-boxes which were filled with snow, ice, sand and straw, and served between the 16th and the end of the 20th century to preserve fish. They were wide-spread along the Adriatic Coast until the beginning of this century.

Town Hall:

The Town Hall of Cesenatico, a house built during the nineteenth century on the east side of the harbour and surmounted by a high tower, was completely destroyed by the bombings of the Second World War.
The new Town Hall was planned by the Architect Giò Ponti and erected in 1960.

Cesenatico Municipal Theatre

It is situated in the town centre, on the left-hand bank of the canal. It was designed by the engineer Candido Panzani and built from 1863 to 1865. The beautiful theatre face is in the neoclassical style. The inside is composed of a central hall that is shaped like a horseshoe with 2 tiers of 15 boxes each. The decoration is a work by several artists. Damaged during the Second World War, the theatre has been completely restored.

S. Giacomo Parish Church

The Parish Church of St. Giacomo is close to the Maritime Museum. The building was built in 1324. The present shape is due to the complete renewal in 1763 by the Architect Pietro Borboni. In the church you can admire two important works by Guido Cagnacci.

Antiquarium

The Antiquarium collects some valuable findings recovered in the surrounding area, where an early Roman settlement was located. The items describe life in Cesenatico during the Republican period and the Roman Empire .
