A town with a long history…

In the history of the town of Gabicce, ancient folk traditions combine with strange legends, myths and the deeds of famous noble families. Gabicce is an interesting tourist destination also from a historical and cultural point of view. Its origins date back to the historical vicissitudes of Gabicce Monte, since Gabicce Mare foundation is the result of events and changes happened mainly in the end of the nineteenth century.
In the past, Gabicce Monte was a small village of farmers and fishermen, and it was called 'Castrum Ligabitii'. Maybe this name derives from the feudal lord that in the tenth century possessed this territory, otherwise the name of Gabicce may results from 'legabecchi' that is how farmers of that time were called.
In any case, the 'Ligabitii Castrum' was made of a small village and a castle that over the centuries, as a result of bloody battles, got many different dominations such as the Archbishop of Ravenna, the powerful Malatesta family, the famous Sforza familiy , the Montefeltro family, the Rovere family until belonging to the Papal State.
Unfortunately, the findings of the ancient castle, found during the XIX century, were destroyed during the Second World War. According to writings of that time, it seems that the population of the village would not go beyond the 500 units from the XVII century to XIX century.
Although the fishing was not the primary activity of Gabicce Monte inhabitants, at the beginning of the XIX century the lack of a port starts to be a problem. For this reason, Gabicce started to implement a series of urban changes that between the '20s and the '30s led to the birth of Gabicce Mare. But it was only in 1942 that the Municipality was transferred to its part on the sea. During the XX century, due to the tourism development, Gabicce Mare has developed and it has become the heart of city life. In the'60s, the period of economic and tourism boom, Gabicce Mare gained a primary role, while Gabicce Monte became the symbol of its history and traditions. Gabicce Monte has also kept a legendary story that concerns the myth of a submerged city, Valbruna, whose we do not have any trace at present. It seems that this ancient city stood in the area where today the Vallugola Bay is located, but its history and its legend are still shrouded in mystery.
